Summer 2008

Making Light Work of Holiday Make-Up

In a recent edition of Channel 4’s Dispatches documentary series (12 May 2008), “The Truth About Beauty Creams”, leading dermatologists cast doubt on the claims that well known beauty creams increase youthfulness and slow down the ageing process. What they did recommend was the all year round use of sun protection. In summer go for an oil-free moisturiser containing spf 15 or higher. Leave for 10 minutes before applying your make-up.

Other basics for a summer holiday make-up kit are waterproof mascara, lip gloss and your foundation to mix with moisturiser to make a comfortable and lightweight base or, if you want to try a different base product, a tinted moisturiser will add a subtle glow to the skin. Another must have is a Vaseline or similar product which is great for chapped lips and skin, as a brow gel and an emergency eye make-up remover.

Fabulous colours for summer are rose gold, mocha and bronze for lips and eyes with deep strong blues for eye liner.

To keep you within your baggage allowance put your basics together with a palette containing eye shades, blushers and highlighters. This will also cut down on tools as most will contain their own applicators and mirror – not the best for everyday but good for an easy life on holiday. Here are some of my favourites:

Elizabeth Arden: Colour Intrigue, Bronzing Beauty Kit – bronze-inspired shades with four eyeshadows and two blushes with applicators and mirror.

Jemma Kidd: Midnight Jewels – three blue and bronze eyeshadows, rose gold lip gloss and ice white crème highlighter with applicator and mirror.

Benefit: Big Beautiful Eyes – three cocoa-inspired eye shades plus an under eye concealer (boi-ing) with applicators and mirror.

Trish McEvoy: Little Black Card Summertime – the all-in-one make-up palette containing three summer shadows, midnight definer, 2 lip glosses, blusher and a face gloss with mirror. Trish McEvoy has a fantastic range of palettes, more so than any other brand and well worth a look (www.trishmcevoy.com).
